Is Mark Masonry Right for Me?

If you are already a Master Mason, then you already know that Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations, providing an environment for people from all backgrounds to make lasting friendships, achieve their individual potential and have fun, so why become a Mark Master Mason?

However, if you have yet to join the organisation and become a Freemason, then it’s important for you to know that Freemasonry is open to all men of over 21 years of age, regardless of social or economic background, race, or religion.  The very nature of Freemasonry is to regard all of us as one family.  All our members have different jobs and employment paths and so it’s likely you will have something in common with some of us right from the beginning.

Freemasonry is open to all men, regardless of religion. How individual members practice their particular beliefs is their business, it is not the business of Freemasonry. Members are not permitted to discuss religion or politics in the Lodge as such matters are the business of the individual and are respected at all times. To become a Freemason, the individual needs to have a belief in something greater than themselves in the universe – a Supreme Being.

Is Mark Masonry for me?

That is one of those questions which we can’t truly answer with a simple Yes or No. Whether you are looking to take your first step in Freemasonry or are a Master Mason and wondering what your next step is, the Masonic Order of Mark Master Masons enables its members to understand  more fully the stages or Degrees of Freemasonry by providing many of the answers to questions posed to the individual as they become a member.

In addition, as a Mark Master Mason you learn further key aspects about yourself as an individual and your responsibilities to others, in essence to make your mark on life. To help begin answering the question we have provided some general information in an open manner below and extend the invitation that if you wish to pursue that question further, then to please contact the District Grand Secretary or complete the contact form.

What is Mark Masonry?

The Order of Mark Master Masons within England is one of the world’s oldest fraternal society, and seeks to encourage thoughtfulness for others, kindness in the community, honesty in business, courtesy in society and justice and fairness in all things.

It is one of the largest Masonic Organisations after Craft Masonry with around 1,500 Mark Lodges being under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, the body which governs Mark Masonry within England and Wales and its Districts and Lodges Overseas.

Members are encouraged to make their ‘mark in the world’ through due regard for the interests of the family, the practical practice of concern for all people; caring for the less fortunate and helping those in need. Members are taught its core values in a dramatic ritual which follows historical forms, and uses mark master stonemasons’ customs and tools as illustrative guides.

Is it time consuming and does it cost much?

As with all organisations you can be involved as much or as little as you like. Mark Lodges typically meet just three or four times a year, with one of those meetings being the annual Installation of a new Master.

During a typical year the District Grand Lodge organises social events for the members of the District, their families and friends, all of which are completely down to the individual to attend or not. Between the formal Lodge meetings detailed above there are also rehearsals and instructional evenings for those members who wish to learn more.

Many members also visit other Lodges, as it a great way to meet new people and make new friends.

Membership is by means of an annual subscription and is typically $100 to $150 per year, which covers the costs of our premises, administration both at all levels, regular information and newsletters plus an advancement fee of $???? for registration at Grand Lodge. Meals, social events and individual charitable donations are extra, but are at a member’s discretion. The cost of a typical meal following a Lodge meeting, is very variable but no more than $25.

There is regalia to purchase and the District Grand Secretary can advise on availability and purchase costs.

Personal satisfaction, not personal gain.

Rumours and false information are rife in all walks of life and for Freemasonry in general and Mark Masonry in particular this is no different.  It has been said time and time again that some become Freemasons for personal benefit or join one of the many Masonic Orders with similar expectations, but if this were true then they failed to grasp the reality of what Freemasonry is about and will be disappointed upon becoming a Mark Master Mason when they find that it is not so.

The friendship, camaraderie and joy that one gets out of Mark Masonry cannot be bought or even put in financial terms.
